Studio Lakdoo: Solid Wood, Turned Into Something Playful

Studio Lakdoo is a design studio in Rajkot, Gujarat, founded by Devang Chhaniara. It makes solid wood furniture and decorative lamps: consoles, coffee tables, side tables, a desk, dining chairs, wall lights, a pendant, a table lamp and a floor lamp. Wood is at the heart of almost everything here.

What makes the collection easy to spot is its shape language. Legs are turned into cylinders, lamps are built from wooden spheres, and tops are cut into soft ovals and circles. A few pieces add dark green marble, brass or a ribbed glass shade. Put two or three together and they feel like one family, which makes it easy to furnish a whole room from this one collection.

Decorative lamps and wall lights

Lakdoo's lighting is where the wood-turning really shines: warm, tactile lamps that look like sculpture even when they're switched off.

• Sora Wall Light : a solid wood wall sconce with a frosted glass globe, shaped after the traditional Indian oil lamp. A pair of these makes a lovely, lasting alternative to string lights for Diwali decoration.
• Mizu Wall Light : hand-turned wooden spheres stacked like an abacus or a wooden toy, with the bulbs set inside. Playful, warm and a great conversation piece in a living room.
• Orba Hanging Light : a pendant made of stacked wooden spheres on a slim black rod, inspired by wooden bead craft. Hang it over a side table or reading corner.
• Dhyan Table Lamp : a decorative table lamp with one smooth wooden curve cradling a round bulb. Named after the Sanskrit word for meditation, and made for a bedside or study desk.
• Lumi Floor Lamp : a 137 cm wood frame with a ribbed glass shade, with a quiet, shoji-screen feel. The easiest way to warm up a corner of the living room.

Consoles

• Elephas Console : the boldest piece in the range. Chunky turned wooden legs and cylindrical forms, topped with dark green marble.
• Calm Console : a solid wood top resting on a green marble base and wooden ball feet, with a round cut-out to hold a planter.
• Oblong Console : a soft oblong wooden console with a built-in hole for a plant pot. A living, green focal point for an entrance.

Coffee tables, side tables and a desk

• Round The Edge : a round coffee table with a wooden base, softened edges and a marble accent on one tall leg. The product photos show a game board set into the top.
• Island Table : an oval wooden top that seems to float on a single solid wood cylinder. Clean, simple and very easy to live with.
• Boast Table : a minimal centre table in solid wood, with its sturdy cylindrical legs built into the design.
• Anthill Table : a side table made from slender teak sticks with exposed joinery, named for its anthill-like form.
• Smithy Table : a round solid wood side table on a matte black metal column, with a metal plate reinforcing the top.
• Soar Table : a round side table with a lifted top on a thick, grounded base.
• Viraam Desk : a solid wood writing desk with a dark green marble top, roughly 6 feet long. Named after the Sanskrit word for "pause", and made for focused work at home.

Chairs

• Loaf Chair : a dark wood dining chair with brass details and soft grey upholstered cushions.
• Turn Away Chair : solid wood bent into a curved back with fine joinery and a beige upholstered seat. Works at a dining table or as an accent chair.

The Studio Lakdoo Design Philosophy — Three Principles

Natural materials, honest construction. Every Studio Lakdoo piece is built from natural wood, natural stone, and glass. The studio's commitment to wooden components is not aesthetic nostalgia but a material position: solid wood is the most dimensionally stable, structurally sound, and visually warm material available for furniture production at the studio scale.

Spherical and circular forms as a consistent vocabulary. The sphere, the cylinder, the circle, and the arc appear as recurring form elements across the entire collection. This formal consistency creates the Studio Lakdoo range read as a family because they share a form vocabulary as specific and recognisable as a design studio's typeface or colour palette.

Design as a life philosophy, not a profession. The studio's own description — "design goes beyond problem-solving or theoretical exploration, it's about giving objects a voice, a story, and a sense of emotion".
